News : Energy International - October 2009

Article published in Energy International, Issue 456, October 2009

Intermodal innovation is pleased to announce the successful delivery of 160 cutting skips to NOV Brandt in Libya.

After several months of close cooperation between both companies and despite challenging deadlines, we have achieved production and delivery dates of October 09.

The units were produced by Intermodal sub-contractors in China and shipped in containers into Misurata, Libya.

For Intermodal, this contract was a challenge to the efficiency and robustness of their outsourced manufacturing strategy. Timescales were short and getting shorter but Intermodal devised and implemented an upgraded production and inspection protocol which ensured that 173 units were produced and shipped within 6 weeks of the customers order. This was only possible due to a hand-on approach to production and quality and the complete trust of Intermodal’s customer NOV Brandt. That trust was not misplaced and initially impossible deadlines were met.

Taking into account the current economic climate, Intermodal have progressed steadily during the past year with containers supplied to Angola, Australia, Dubai, Kazakhstan & Singapore as well as supplying BJ Tubular Services with over 200 baskets of varying designs.

With the three-quarters of 2009 behind them and with a significant increase in enquiry levels, the company is looking forward to the fourth quarter 09 and the beginning of 2010, when the company we will be implementing a significant diversification of their activities.

A major element of this diversification is Intermodal Engineering, the recently set up operating division offering design and engineering services to the Oil & Gas industry in particular offshore logistics, sub-sea equipment and access systems.

This division is based at the company’s Lancaster facility where the company continues the production of specialised equipment and prototypes.

Interesting recent production from the Lancaster facility was a second order for 25ft inter-lockable offshore baskets for French customer, Sercel. The set of 5 baskets is transportable as one single units and is certified to DNV 2.7-1. The baskets were custom designed by Intermodal to reduce excessive rig-time during the deployment of their seismic acquisition equipment.

Over the forthcoming year, as well as developing new designs for specific customers, Intermodal will be embarking on a series of research and development projects, including a new generation of offshore reefer containers.

Outside Northern Europe, Intermodal has ambitious plans to expand their manufacturing operations in order to cater for greater regional demands by establishing partnerships and replicate their successful outsourcing production program. Initially this project will involve manufacturing in Brazil and Mexico but additional strategic partnerships in the Middle and Far East are also currently under consideration.
